How we Started
Lowana was started by local parents who wanted to establish a place where the overall character of their daughters is nurtured and developed in an environment of friendship and trust.
For the past 20 years various parents and volunteers – seeking to promote good values and develop the characters of young women – have run activities in their own homes throughout the Western suburbs. More and more girls started attending activities and the idea of establishing a youth centre in the West became a dream. Due to the untiring commitment and drive of many families, Lowana was able to start in a rented premise in South Penrith in September 2008. Since 2012, Lowana has its permanent premise at 11 Higgins St.
All activities are run by a group of volunteers including teachers, university students, young professionals and parents. The activities offered include study programs, private tuition, leadership camps, holiday activities and opportunities for community service.
Lowana is a project of the Association for Educational Projects Limited (AEPL), a non-profit company focused on promoting educational activities, character development and Christian ideals. AEPL supports a wide range of programs aimed at providing education and building social awareness in young people throughout Australia. The spiritual and doctrinal formation offered at Lowana is entrusted to Opus Dei, a personal Prelature of the Catholic Church which helps people find holiness in everyday life.
